~ Strange Goings On ~
It’s been both a long and a short week. I’ve been working flat-out, which is a bit of a shock to the system after our lovely relaxing week of olive picking – but it’s all money in the bank to keep us somewhat afloat next year so can’t complain. As I sit staring at the screen working while Scott and Isabella are without me downstairs I do sometimes wonder what we’re trying to achieve. It’s hard when work is busy for me because the aim is to spend more time together but with a million deadlines in one week – we have no choice but for me to get on with it. The thinking is that in order to really give ourselves a good year in France trying out the lifestyle, we need to make the practicalities of that year a little easier – hence my working solid at the moment. Like I said though, sometimes it’s hard to stay focused on the goal when you’re stuck on a computer all day all the while dreaming of a time when you can grow vegetables on your own land, make and sell lovely things and write at your leisure. But every goal has an initial price so we’re not really complaining and we’re hoping that next year Scott will have a little job to enjoy and I will be able to spend more time creating – but just for a moment let us all dream about how wonderful it would be to only have to do the things we want to do!
Anyway, there has certainly been plenty of things this week to keep us boosted like breakfast in the Baza hills with THE most glorious of skies – wouldn’t you agree?
And a couple of strange things like driving through the local main town (it’s a busy place – trust me) to see that a man on a donkey going round a roundabout is still accepted as pretty normal:
Or receiving a whole load of vegetables from our lovely neighbour and then finding a pepper ‘within’ a pepper. How very odd – have you ever seen this before???
And lastly – spending this evening with the fire on, roasting chestnuts bought at the market this morning. When I was a kid we used to roast chestnuts on the fire and the taste of them just takes me all the way back there. Divine.
It has been a busy week, but sometimes being able to appreciate these small things make it all so worthwhile.

I should have John read your post, as he is struggling with the same things--working to make the life we want to lead possible--but so when does he get to lead that wished-for life? I am trying to set up a business for us to run when he gets done with that pesky city job in another year and a half--and meanwhile I try to take care of the homefront so that part, at least, is smooth sailing for him. I'm sure your hubby appreciates your hardwork. Hang in there, it won't be long! And meanwhile, what scenery!
Hi Meg, thanks for your comment - much appreciated :-)
Yeah, sometimes it's hard to stay focused on the goal, but Scott is fab. He takes care of EVERYTHING when I'm working. We see it as 'teamwork' as we are working towards a collective goal and we do what we each can/have to do to achieve it. Neither of us likes it when I have to be stuck working, but like you say - we'll get there in the end and hopefully find a happy medium all round.
Anyway, yesterday we found the most beautiful spot for a Birthday picnic (mine on Wednesday) just outside the village. It's amazing how the prospect of a champagne picnic with fab views makes everything alright!!! You'll get there too, I'm sure :-)
I know exactly what you mean. Trying to live this dream of ours means we are busier than ever. My husband keeps saying, we need to slow down. But we also need cash and so there is no choice but to plunge forward!
Hi Maryam, thank you for stopping by and for your lovely comment. It is comforting to know that there are lots of us out here trying to achieve the life we want! It doesn't always come easy, but I think the benefits that we maybe wouldn't otherwise have, are worth it :-)
Alice, you have the same birthday as my son! He'll be a whopping 20 years old on Wednesday. I just had dinner with him tonight in town.
Enjoy your picnic and happy, happy birthday!!!
